Used 486 and entry level used Pentium Laptop Systems still have a lot of life left in them. Today when Pentiums have been superseded by Pentium II computer systems, some people may wonder why someone would need a used 486 laptop system. Here are some of the reasons why used and / or refurbished 80486 notebook computer systems are still going strong:

  1. They are excellent training systems. A 486 laptop has enough power to run a large number of training courses, be they in computer training or some other profession.
  2. Used 486 laptops are more than adequate where a computer is being used primarily for typing / word-processing.
  3. As intelligent terminals in a network, pre-owned 486 or entry level Pentium laptops are an excellent choice. Why buy a $700 thin client when a $400 486 notebook is available.
  4. As dumb terminals on a network. Forget a refurbished 486 laptop, even a 286 laptop can fit in that role just fine. Still cheaper than buying a new terminal and does the same job.
  5. Pre-Owned 486 laptop computers are well suited for e-mail applications. A lot of people give a used 486 notebook with a modem as a gift to a friend or family member so that they can conveniently e-mail each other and stay in touch. E-mail applications don't require a Pentium II machine, a good old 486 notebook is just fine for it.
  6. Used 486 laptops or entry level Pentium notebooks are very handy for students who can best utilize their time if they had a notebook but can't afford a brand new one.
  7. Even business people can utilize a used low end notebook for work that needs to be completed on the weekend. A 486 laptop can effectively handle most word-processing, spreadsheet and database applications.

In short, if you are looking for a low end laptop computer, give a serious look to used 486 laptops. They are a very good investment for their price.
