The external laptop hard drives can be used in conjunction with your existing hard drives. For example; you have a 540MB hard drive in your system but you need more storage space. Instead of removing the original, you can add the external hard drive to your laptop as an additional drive. Your system will see the original 540MB drive as the 'C' drive and the new external PCMCIA port hard drive as 'D' drive. External hard drives are portable. You can carry them with you and attach them to other laptops as and when needed.
